There are so many beautiful places worldwide that it’s a shame to get stuck on one specific location. But how do you choose the best destination for your workation? In this blog post, you can read my 7 tips for working while enjoying your destination.

Location, location, location
The first thing to consider when choosing a destination for your workation is the location. You need to make sure that it is easily accessible and that there is plenty to do in the area.
If you are looking for a quiet place to work, then a remote location is ideal. But if you are looking for a place where you can also have some fun and explore, then a more urban area is better.
A lot depends on your preference. I myself made my choice based on amenities. I like to work from a coworking space or coffee bar. After work, I definitely also want to have the opportunity to meet people.
For me, it doesn’t have to be a destination with a vibrant nightlife. A cool, relaxed atmosphere with a fun vibe is more than enough for me.
Big spender or minimalist: What’s your budget?
Another important consideration when choosing a destination is your budget. You need to make sure that the accommodations and activities you are interested in fall within this budget. If you have a tight budget, a cheaper destination might be better. But if money is no object, you can go anywhere in the world!
Cheaper destinations are mostly found in Asia. Here, finding accommodation on a limited budget is no problem at all. Do you have a firm budget? Then North America is definitely an option.
Be sure to determine your budget in advance. Take into account the following things:
- How much do you want to spend for a flight?
- What is the maximum cost of accommodation?
- Will you be working in coworking spaces or in your residence?
- Are you going to cook for yourself or eat out every day?
- How will you get around?
What things do you definitely want to do at your destination?
If you leave with some sort of budget, you’re not going to have any surprises. Do keep some room for possible extras like gifts or trips.

Think about the weather
Sitting inside for an entire day because it keeps pouring outside, I don’t think so. Always check the weather forecast before booking your workout. Online you can find a lot of information about precipitation, temperature, humidity and much more.
Want to escape the cold winter months and enjoy summer temperatures on the other side of the world? You can! Many Europeans choose a workation in Latin America during the winter.
Do you want to go in the other direction? Then keep in mind the rainy season in Asia. As such, it never rains whole days at a time but a few heavy downpours do occur.
Where do you want to stay?
Another factor to consider when choosing a destination for your workation is what type of accommodation you need.
Typically, for working abroad you will need a stable Wi-Fi connection. So keep this in mind during your search. On AirBNB, many lodgings in popular nomad destinations have added a picture of the Internet speed. Is there no info there? Then be sure to read the reviews of other guests.
Personally, I find it important to have a comfortable workspace in the accommodation. A table with a comfortable chair to be able to work even in your own stay.
Start your research
Have you considered all the previous factors? Then it is time to start your search. You can find a lot of information online.
My main source is nomadlist. On this website you will find the most popular destinations with extensive information. Just think about budget, range, temperature, safety and more. Highly recommended during your search.
You can find accommodation through different platforms. Do you like security? Then book your stay in advance through airbnb of Booking.com. Facebook groups are also a good source of information. Many private hosts post their stays in groups to appeal to the right target audience.

Make a list of pros and cons
Once you have done your research and are left with certain destinations, it is time to make a list of pros and cons for each destination. This will help you compare each place and ultimately make the best decision for your work station.
Go by your gut feeling
Ultimately, it is important to go by your gut when choosing a destination for your workation. If a place just feels right, chances are it will. So trust your instincts and go on an adventure!
Travel and work is becoming increasingly popular as more people realize they can combine it perfectly and still be productive. By keeping location, budget, weather, accommodation and research in mind and following your gut, you are sure to find the perfect place for your next working vacation!
